Childbearing women and couples, midwives, physicians, and labor and delivery nurses appreciate the resources, techniques, knowledge and continuous empathetic support a doula provides. For women without partners, the doula may be the only source of focused, continuous emotional support throughout labor.

Bradley teachers urge their couples to find what is comfortable for them in labor. While other methods seek to control the sensations of labor, (emphasizing distraction as their primary labor control technique), Bradley emphasizes relaxed abdominal breathing and relaxation throughout labor. The Bradley Method is the only method which stresses avoidance of drugs and interventions, unless they are medically indicated. Under normal circumstances, natural childbirth is considered safest for mother and baby.
